AUK–Dartmouth Partnership Pushes Boundaries in Security and Smart Home Technology

Dr. Ali Bostani, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at the American University of Kuwait (AUK), embarked on a pivotal research fellowship at Dartmouth College, collaborating with Pierson and Pat and John Rosenwald Professor of Computer Science, David Kotz of the SPLICE research group to advance the technology.
Throughout his two-month fellowship, Dr. Bostani successfully integrated his specialized knowledge of configurable antennas with Dartmouth's harmonic radar technology. This synergy resulted in the tripling of the radar device's detection range. This advancement enables the more effective discovery of electronic devices, including those that are powered off or disconnected, which is an essential feature for security and privacy in modern smart homes.
Inspired by his experience at Dartmouth, Dr. Bostani envisions establishing a dedicated harmonic radar lab in AUK. This lab will enable continued research and development of this groundbreaking device. He hopes to incorporate the technology into capstone projects for graduating students, fostering practical hands-on experience. Additionally, he sees commercial potential in the device, particularly for government agencies and individual homeowners. “This device acts as a specialized radio scanner that shines a safe radio signal into a room and listens for a very particular echo that only electric components can produce, and detecting them, especially while buying a new house, ensures the safety of the new homeowners,” Dr Ali explained.
This fellowship reinforced the strength of the partnership between AUK and Dartmouth, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration that bridges engineering, security, ethics, and practical applications.
