The American University of Kuwait (AUK) announced that Clark Stoeckley, Associate Professor of Art and Graphic Design, received a Dartmouth fellowship to research the intersection of risograph printmaking and Islamic geometric patterns.
Stoeckley, with a background in graphic design, illustration, public art, and printmaking, focuses on visual communication and cultural research. In Kuwait, he has created public murals, exhibited internationally, and developed innovative curricula. His recent work explores Islamic geometric patterns through experimental print processes. He holds an MFA from Brooklyn College and a BFA from Webster University.
The fellowship will enable Stoeckley to create twenty multilayered risograph print editions based on mosque architecture patterns. His research will examine how risograph printmaking, with its unique ink properties, can enhance Islamic geometric design.
Collaborating with Professor Tricia Treacy at Dartmouth College, Stoeckley will conduct studio experiments and archival research using Dartmouth’s facilities and collections. This project is among the first to link risograph printmaking with Islamic patterns, contributing to discussions on decolonizing art curricula by highlighting non-Western visual systems.
The fellowship will enrich AUK’s curriculum by developing a risograph module for courses like Introduction to Creativity, 2D Design, and Illustration.
“Islamic geometric patterns are sophisticated visual systems,” said Stoeckley. “Through risograph printmaking, I aim to explore the relationship between tradition and technology, bringing new insights to AUK and expanding student opportunities.”
