“Oral History” Preserves National Memory for Future Generations
The AUK Oral History and Documentation Project, sponsored by KIPCO, is an initiative dedicated to preserving Kuwait’s national memory by documenting first-hand accounts of the country’s social and cultural history.
Launched in 2020, the project initially focused on interviewing individuals born before 1960, capturing personal experiences and aspects of Kuwait’s history that may not always feature prominently in traditional written records, including daily life, childhood and women’s experiences.
By documenting people from diverse fields and backgrounds, the project provides a broader historical perspective and creates a valuable resource for researchers across disciplines including sociology, psychology, anthropology and linguistics. The material can also support creative and educational works, including podcasts, literature and art.
The recorded interviews, along with their transcripts, translations and supporting documents, are made available to the public through AUK, helping preserve these first-hand accounts and pass Kuwait’s collective memory on to future generations.
